Feb 06, 2011 (Sun) 2 PM - 3 PM Unity Church of Greenville, 207 Belvue Rd., Taylors, SC Amina Linda McMakinUniversal Worship Service: The Golden Rule The Universal Worship Service was the inspiration of Sufi Master, Hazrat Inayat Khan, who recognized the unity of religious ideals and was inspired to create a service wherein the followers of any of the world’s religions could come together to worship and to discover that there is One Source from which all scriptures have come. At one altar, we will read scriptures from the Holy Book of each religion represented; and we light candles symbolically representing the wisdom brought to the world by these religions. One by one, the candles literally increase the light and figuratively bring the light of the only Wisdom, Truth, Love and Beauty to those attending. For more info: Amina Linda McMakin (864) 947-7028
Jan 21, 2011 (Fri) 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM Furman University, Greenville, SC Amina Linda McMakinThe Aramaic Prayer of Jesus, OLLI Program In this workshop, we will explore the hidden depths of the prayer of Jesus known as the Lord’s Prayer and learn to speak it in Aramaic, the language which Jesus spoke. To integrate the learning, we will use simple melodies and circle dance movements known as “body prayers,” an ancient Middle Eastern form of meditation that engages the entire body in contemplation of scripture. This view of Jesus words is the work of Dr. Neil Douglas-Klotz, author of “Prayers of the Cosmos: Meditations on the Aramaic Words of Jesus.” No previous experience is needed; music and movements are taught by the instructor. To register, contact the OLLI office at 864-294-2998

Nov 06, 2009 (Fri) - Nov 08, 2009 (Sun) Lutheridge Conference Center, Near Asheville, NC Dr. Neil Douglas-KlotzThe Way of Renewal: Healing Pathways of the Heart This public workshop will select healing resources from the rich treasure of the "pathways of the heart" found in the Sufi practice of the 99 Beautiful Names. For several decades, Saadi has specialized in adapting ancient Sufi practices to the everyday challenges of modern life, and in 2005 produced a new translation of these practices in The Sufi Book of Life. The focus for this workshop will be on the many pathways that deal with strength, renewal, releasing, trust, being at home in the body, and increasing clarity in relationship with one's inner healing guidance. As resources we will use chant, heart meditation, walking meditation, body prayer, whirling and other forms of sacred movement and body awareness. Aug 09, 2009 (Sun) - Sep 08, 2009 (Tue) Various locations and dates, including Asheville, NC and Greenville, SC Amina Linda McMakinMary Magdalene Series Join us for one or more of the dances in this special series, Dancing with Mary Magdalene. Over the past few years there has been renewed interest in Mary Magdalene, as evidenced in new translations of the Gnostic gospels, TV specials, and the film, Mary of Magdala. This renewed interest represents the archetypal Feminine Principle and the balancing of co-equality between men and women through the profound mysteries of the sacred marriage, the earthly and heavenly union, and the awakening of the Feminine. An unexpected journey into the Magdalene mysteries began for Amina Linda during the 2008 Lent and Easter season. One by one, she was led to create a series of dances that seemed to capture a particular vibration, the vibration of the Anointed Bride. This inspirational process continues to this day, and a repertory of sixteen dances has "come through." Some events in this series are for Women only or require reservations. Jul 05, 2009 (Sun) 7 PM Servanthood House, 156 E. Chestnut Street, Asheville, NC Perry Wali PikeGospel Zikr Perry Pike grew up in rural Arkansas, attending a one-room country church with his family. His childhood memories of ecstatic singing led him to connect Sufi zikr to gospel music. He's wanted to show his childhood Christian community how to pray with their whole bodies, minds, and hearts. He's also wanted Sufis to taste the sweet and joyful ecstasy of gospel music. This zikr is a group practice with simple movements, some chanting in English, and familiar old Christian hymns like This Little Light of Mine, and Glory Glory Halleluia, since I laid my burdens down (sung to the tune of Will the circle be unbroken...). As the circle experiences deep joy and ecstatic listening to the collective heart, Perry embraces his two loves in one form. Suggested minimum donation is $ 5.
